England is one of the four 'home nations' that make up the United Kingdom. It is the largest of them, both in terms of surface area and population (about 50 million inhabitants out of about 60 million).
On the island of Great Britain, Scotland lies to the north of England and Wales is to the west. Northern Ireland (also part of the United Kingdom) and the Republic of Ireland lie across the Irish Sea to west of England and Wales. France is across the English Channel to the south and to the east is The North Sea.
Two small self governing areas of the British Islands (although not in the United Kingdom) are the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea, and the Channel Islands which are near the coast of Northern France
The United Kingdom can be divided into regions with deep historical and linguistic roots most of which also have long histories, but have been revised in many cases for administrative reasons.
Scotland is divided into the Highland region with spectacular scenery and small towns, and the Lowland region containing Glasgow and Edinburgh
The smaller countries of Wales and Northern Ireland.
The South of England is roughly the area south of the River Thames and the Bristol Channel which we have divided into:-
London which is a vast and diverse metropolitan region, the capital city of both England and the United Kingdom and a global capital of finance, fashion and culture.
South East which, broadly speaking, is the area around and south of London to the English Channel.
Southern Englandwhich includes the territory near the English Channel.
The South-West or the West Country, the often-rugged peninsula extending southwest into the Atlantic and also the adjoining counties.
The English Midlands is the industrial and rural area of England east of Wales and across to the North Sea.
East Anglia is a largely low-lying rural area north east of London.
The North West is an area of major industrial cities but also breathtaking scenery between Wales and Scotland.
The North East, the urbanised areas of Teesside, Tyne and Wear which also includes Yorkshire regarded as one of the most scenic, varied and interesting of all the traditional counties.
The North of England is the sparsely populated borders with Scotland.

Birmingham - the UK's second largest city (by population) is located in the industrial heartland and many attractions for the traveller. It is a cultural, sporting, entertainment, shopping and media hub.

Brighton - Victorian seaside resort turned into one of the major night life centres of Europe..
Edinburgh - the capital of Scotland, home to the World's largest Arts Festival every August and the First European City of Literature. Most of the city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Glasgow - largest city in Scotland and at one time had the largest ship building industry in the world.
Liverpool - Famed nautical city and home of the Beatles. (European capital of culture 2008)
Manchester - a cultural, sporting, entertainment, shopping and media hub. The UK's second largest city by metropolitan area, but its third largest by population.
Nottingham - home of Robin Hood and Nottingham Castle.
Newcastle upon Tyne - a thriving northern city with world-famous night life.
Swansea - city by the sea and second largest urban area id Wales with beautiful coastline and sandy beaches.
York - ancient capital of Yorkshire, with Roman, Viking and Medieval remains.
